OpenAI Rejects Elon Musk’s $97.4 Billion Buyout Offer

OpenAI’s board has rejected an acquisition offer led by Elon Musk, which has sent ripples through the tech industry. The proposal, which valued OpenAI at an astonishing $97.4 billion, did not sway the board, and they made it clear: OpenAI is not for sale.

Bret Taylor, OpenAI’s board chairman, took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce the decision. He stated, “OpenAI is not for sale,” and explained that the board unanimously rejected Musk’s bid. Taylor emphasized that any changes in OpenAI’s structure will only reinforce its nonprofit mission to ensure that artificial general intelligence (AGI) benefits all of humanity.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and departed in 2018, recently filed court documents indicating he would withdraw his buyout offer if OpenAI reverted to a nonprofit model. Today, OpenAI operates as a hybrid organization. Its for-profit subsidiary drives cutting-edge research and technological breakthroughs, while the nonprofit arm remains dedicated to the broader mission of serving society.

The board’s decision has sparked further tensions between Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Altman stands by a profit-driven approach that he argues is crucial for advancing technology. In contrast, Musk criticizes this strategy, especially highlighting OpenAI’s close partnership with Microsoft, which he sees as a competitive disadvantage.

Industry experts, including voices from Digital Barker, view Musk’s bid as a strategic maneuver aimed at disrupting OpenAI’s ongoing fundraising efforts. Chris Lehane, OpenAI’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, dismissed the proposal by pointing out that it came from a competitor that has struggled to keep up with the rapid pace of innovation in AI.

State regulators in California and Delaware now face the task of evaluating the nonprofit arm’s valuation during any future restructuring. This scrutiny ensures that as OpenAI evolves, it remains true to its mission of leveraging AGI for the greater good. With the board’s decisive rejection of Musk’s offer, OpenAI continues to champion its vision of using AI to benefit all of humanity while navigating the complexities of a competitive and rapidly changing technological landscape.
